Municipal waste management calculator
From population to LCA-ready waste data in minutes
Enter a city’s population and per-capita waste generation. The calculator splits the waste stream by material, routes every tonne to incineration, composting, recycling or landfill, and gives you the results as background data you can drop straight into your LCA model. Released 9 October 2026.

The hardest part of a waste LCA happens before you open the LCA software
To model municipal waste in an LCA, you first need a defensible inventory: how much waste the city generates, what it is made of, and where each material actually goes.
Many LCA users find this step slow and error-prone. Composition and routing shares have to be multiplied out by hand, mass balances rarely close, and the results then have to be converted into flows and units the LCA software accepts.
The calculator handles this step for you. Every tonne generated is accounted for, every material closes at 100%, and every result is ready to use as background data.
Background data for any LCA software
The calculator was built first as a tool for life cycle assessment studies. Its LCA Inventory sheet converts all results into flows in kilograms, linked live to your inputs. Download the calculator and use the output with:
- openLCA — flow names and provider processes are already mapped, so you can enter amounts directly.
- LCA for Experts (GaBi) — transfer route and material amounts into your waste treatment plans.
- SimaPro — use the material and route quantities as inputs to your waste scenarios.
- Excel and in-house models — every result is a plain, traceable formula.
- Any other LCA tool — outputs are in standard units (t/yr, kg, t/day), so they move into any model.
Change one input and every flow updates instantly, so you can run scenarios without rebuilding your inventory.
Three steps, one sheet
- Enter your cityEnter population and per-capita waste generation (kg per person per day). The calculator returns annual waste generation in tonnes as the functional unit, plus daily tonnage and kilograms per capita.
- Set composition and routesEnter the share of kitchen and food waste, paper, plastic, metals, wood, textile and glass, and how much of each goes to incineration, composting and recycling. Landfill is calculated automatically, so every material always closes at 100%.
- Read the resultsGet tonnes per material and route, route totals and shares, daily facility loads, per-capita indicators, the aluminium and copper recycling split, and a full LCA inventory. Five quality checks confirm the model is sound before you use the numbers.
What’s inside
- One-sheet calculator — all inputs and results in one place, with editable cells marked in blue and validation that blocks invalid entries.
- Guaranteed mass balance — landfill is the residual route, so no tonne disappears and no tonne is counted twice.
- Built-in quality checks — composition sums to 100%, every route closes, mass balance difference is zero, route shares sum to 100%, metal split sums to 100%.
- Facility sizing — daily loads for the waste-to-energy plant, composting plant, material recovery facility and sanitary landfill.
- Key performance indicators — diversion rate, landfill rate, landfill per capita, generation per capita, daily tonnage and recovered metals.
- LCA Inventory sheet — 17 flows in kilograms with sign conventions and provider processes, ready for your LCA model.
- Live dashboard — 10 KPI tiles and 6 native Excel charts, all linked to your inputs.
- Fully transparent — no macros and no hidden calculations. Every number traces back to a visible formula.
See your waste system at a glance
Ten KPI tiles show total generation, daily tonnage, diversion rate, landfill rate, per-capita indicators, tonnes recycled, composted and incinerated, and overall model status. Six charts sit beneath them.
- Waste composition — each material’s share of the total stream.
- Treatment route split — incineration, composting, recycling and landfill shares.
- Tonnes by material and route — where every material goes, in one stacked view.
- Facility daily load — tonnes per day for each treatment facility.
- Per-capita treatment — kilograms per person per year for each route.
- Route mix within each material — how each material is managed, side by side.
A city of 6 million people
The calculator ships with example inputs so you can see it working before entering your own data. These figures illustrate the method and are not data for any specific city.

One tool, many users
- LCA practitioners — build the waste inventory and background data for municipal waste LCA studies.
- Waste management practitioners and planners — estimate generation, compare routing options and size facilities.
- Municipalities and public authorities — create a quick, transparent baseline of the city’s waste system.
- Consultants — produce consistent, traceable numbers for client projects and proposals.
- Researchers and educators — teach and test waste system modelling with a fully open, formula-based tool.
- Students — learn how composition, routing and mass balance connect to LCA.
Transparent by design
- Annual generation (t/yr) = population × per-capita generation (kg/person/day) × 365 ÷ 1,000. This total is the functional unit.
- Tonnes routed = material tonnes × route share. Landfill share = 100% − incineration − composting − recycling.
- Diversion rate = (composting + recycling) ÷ total generated.
- Daily facility load = annual route tonnes ÷ days per year.
Default values are example inputs. Replace them with local data before using results in decisions or reporting. Download the calculator to start with your own city.

What does the municipal waste management calculator do?
It estimates a city’s annual municipal solid waste from population and per-capita generation, breaks the waste down by seven materials, and routes each material to incineration, composting, recycling or landfill. Results come out in tonnes per year, tonnes per day, kilograms per capita and percentage shares, with a live dashboard and an LCA inventory alongside.
Can I use the results in my LCA model?
Yes. That is the main purpose of the tool. The LCA Inventory sheet supplies 17 flows in kilograms, linked live to your inputs, which you can use as background data in openLCA, LCA for Experts (GaBi), SimaPro, Excel or any other LCA software. Change an input and every flow recalculates.
Which LCA software is supported?
Any LCA software. Flow names and provider processes are pre-mapped for openLCA. Because every output is in standard units, tonnes per year, kilograms and tonnes per day, the amounts transfer directly into LCA for Experts (GaBi), SimaPro, Excel models and other tools without conversion.
How does the calculator keep the mass balance closed?
Landfill is calculated as the residual route for every material, so each material’s routes always add up to 100% and no tonne disappears or is counted twice. A built-in check confirms the mass balance difference is zero, and four further checks cover composition, route shares and the metal split.
Do I need macros or special software?
No. The calculator is a standard Microsoft Excel workbook with no macros. Every result is a visible formula you can trace and review, and the dashboard charts are native Excel charts linked to the same cells, so the file opens and recalculates on any recent version of Excel.
Can waste practitioners who do not run LCA studies use it?
Yes. Waste planners, municipalities, consultants and researchers use it to estimate generation, compare routing options, check diversion and landfill rates, and size treatment facilities in tonnes per day. The LCA Inventory sheet is there when needed and can be ignored when it is not.
Are the default values real data?
No. The default inputs describe an example city of 6 million people generating 0.95 kg per person per day, included to show how the tool works. Replace them with local data before using the results in decisions, studies or reporting.
Can I model scenarios?
Yes. Change any composition or routing share and every result, chart and LCA flow updates instantly, so you can compare routing options side by side in seconds without rebuilding the inventory or re-entering data in your LCA software.
