MFA is a quantitative procedure to determine the flow of materials and energy across the economy. It uses I/O methodologies, including material and economic information. With MFA, we capture mass balances where inputs and outputs (consumption and accumulated waste) concern the materials’ ecological impacts. Following this MFA approach, a systematic assessment of the material flows and inventories in a well-defined system in space and time based on the law of conservation of mass is performed. Therefore, by examining if the material stream is sustainable concerning the environmental burden and resources, proper decisions or improvement actions can be taken.
