LCA Critical Review (ISO 14040/14044) | Independent Technical Review
This engagement covers only the independent critical review and pre-submission audit of your existing Life Cycle Assessment study.
Where DEISO provides LCA modeling services, such services are contracted separately and are never performed on the study subject to critical review.
LCA Critical Review (ISO 14040 / ISO 14044)
Independent Technical Review, Editing & Pre-Submission Audit of LCA Studies
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results are increasingly used in procurement decisions, public sustainability claims, product declarations, and tender documentation. In these contexts, credibility depends on whether the study is methodologically defensible, transparent, and aligned with ISO requirements.
If your organization has prepared an LCA study (internally or with an appointed consultant), DEISO provides Independent LCA Critical Review to evaluate conformity with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 and to strengthen readiness prior to publication, comparative assertions, or program operator submission.
To preserve independence, DEISO does not prepare the LCA study subject to review and does not act as a verification/certification body. Our role is limited to independent technical review, editing, and pre-submission audit to improve readiness before formal third-party processes (where applicable).
When an LCA Critical Review Is Required or Strongly Recommended
- Public comparative assertions or product comparisons
- EPD development support where a critical review is expected by the program operator or client governance
- High-stakes procurement or tender documentation
- Investor- or board-sensitive sustainability disclosures
- Studies involving complex allocation, multi-site systems, or mixed data quality
What an ISO 14044 Critical Review Evaluates
A critical review evaluates whether an LCA study is consistent with ISO principles, requirements, and methodological expectations. It is not a superficial read-through. It is a structured technical assessment of how the study was designed, modeled, interpreted, and documented.
Core Review Dimensions
- Goal and scope — stated purpose, intended audience, decision context, and system modeling logic
- Functional unit and reference flow — clarity, appropriateness, and consistency across the model
- System boundary — inclusions/exclusions, cut-offs, and transparency of assumptions
- Allocation and multi-output processes — methodological choices, justification, and sensitivity where needed
- Data quality — representativeness, temporal/geographical alignment, and documentation sufficiency
- Impact assessment — method selection, characterization factors, and category consistency
- Interpretation — conclusions supported by results, limitations disclosed, and completeness of discussion
- Reporting — reproducibility, transparency, and auditability of the LCA narrative and annexes
Critical Review Deliverables
- Structured findings register (gaps, risks, non-conformities)
- Actionable correction recommendations aligned with ISO 14040/14044 expectations
- Consistency and defensibility improvements (methods, assumptions, documentation)
- Independent technical review conclusion suitable for internal governance and pre-submission readiness
Critical Review vs Pre-Submission Audit — Strategic Difference
Organizations often require two different support modes: (1) formal methodological evaluation (critical review) and (2) practical readiness improvement before external submission (pre-submission audit and editing). DEISO provides both in a controlled and independence-preserving structure.

- Study boundary, functional unit, and modeling approach
- Software model and documentation package identification
- Evidence readiness and data quality expectations
Step 2 — Technical Review Execution
Structured ISO-aligned review procedures, including methodological assessment, plausibility checks, consistency testing across model outputs, and documentation integrity evaluation.
Step 3 — Independent Technical Conclusion
- Independent critical review conclusion
- Technical findings (if applicable)
- Improvement recommendations and pre-submission readiness guidance
Why DEISO
- Industrial-sector specialization and decision-grade technical writing
- Deep LCA, PCF, and value-chain carbon expertise
- Structured methodology-first review approach
- Risk-aware assessment focused on defensibility and transparency
- Independent, technically grounded review and editing support
We operate with discipline, documentation rigor, and governance sensitivity.
Request an LCA Scope Assessment
If your LCA study is prepared and you require an independent critical review prior to publication, comparative claims, or submission:
Submit LCA Critical Review Inquiry
A structured scoping discussion determines:
- Review objective and decision context
- Study complexity and expected depth
- Timeline and required documentation package
Critical Review vs Pre-Submission Audit — Detailed Comparison
| Dimension | LCA Critical Review (ISO 14040/14044) | LCA Pre-Submission Audit & Editing |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Objective | Assess methodological conformity and defensibility | Improve readiness and reduce corrective cycles before submission |
| Main Focus | ISO alignment, methodological rigor, transparency | Completeness, consistency, clarity, submission readiness |
| Testing Depth | Methodology-first evaluation and consistency checks | Practical gap fixing, narrative tightening, evidence organization |
| Best Fit | Comparative claims, public disclosures, high-stakes decisions | EPD/PCF submissions, internal governance, procurement readiness |
| Typical Output | Independent critical review conclusion and findings register | Audit findings register + edited narrative + corrective action guidance |
| Role of DEISO | Independent technical reviewer | Independent technical auditor/editor prior to external submission |
Engagement Process
Step 1 — Scope Confirmation
Define:
- Study objective (publication, comparative assertion, EPD support, internal governance)
- Functional unit and system boundary
- Modeling approach and software used
- Allocation methods and cut-off criteria
- Data quality expectations and documentation completeness
Step 2 — Technical Review Execution
Structured ISO 14040/14044-aligned review procedures, including methodological evaluation, consistency checks, transparency assessment, and plausibility analysis across the full LCA model and report.
Step 3 — Independent Technical Conclusion
You receive:
- Independent critical review conclusion
- Structured findings register (if applicable)
- Corrective and improvement recommendations
- Pre-submission readiness guidance (where relevant)
Why DEISO
- Industrial-sector specialization
- Advanced LCA and product carbon technical depth
- Methodology-first ISO-aligned review framework
