how many accidents, injuries, and cases of work-related illness occur in producing one unit of a product, counting every process in the supply chain rather than only the reporting company’s own site.

Today LCWE is best understood not as a standalone method but as one part of 사회적 전과정평가(S-LCA). It was the earliest attempt to bring social consequences into life cycle thinking, and the framework that grew out of it now covers a far wider set of impacts on workers, communities, consumers, and value chain actors. This article explains what LCWE measures, how it sits within S-LCA, and what a study of this kind actually requires.

From working environment to social assessment

LCWE emerged from Danish life cycle research in the 1990s. Its reasoning was simple and remains sound: an inventory already records what each process in a supply chain consumes and produces, so it can equally record the labour hours each process requires. Once labour hours are known, occupational statistics convert them into quantified harm — accidents, lost work days, disease cases — expressed per functional unit.

That insight was the seed of a broader question. Occupational injury is only one of the ways a supply chain affects people. Wages, working hours, freedom of association, child and forced labour, community displacement, and consumer safety are all consequences of production, and none of them appear in an accident statistic. S-LCA was developed to cover that full range, formalised in the UNEP Guidelines for Social Life Cycle Assessment of Products and Organizations.

          The relationship in one line

LCWE is the ancestor and, in current practice, a subcategory: health and safety of workers within the worker stakeholder group of an S-LCA. A study can still be run on that subcategory alone, but it is now understood as a partial social assessment rather than a complete one.

How S-LCA is structured

S-LCA organises social impacts by stakeholder group, and within each group by impact subcategory. A supplier paying above the living wage scores differently from one paying the legal minimum, which scores differently again from one paying below it. Results are usually presented as performance levels rather than as a single aggregate number.

Type II — impact pathway assessment

Social consequences are modelled causally, in the way environmental impact pathways are modelled: an activity produces an exposure, which produces a health or wellbeing effect, which can be expressed in a damage unit such as disability-adjusted life years. LCWE is the most developed Type II pathway in existence, because occupational injury and illness are among the few social impacts with the statistical basis to support that chain.

This is why LCWE remains distinctive within S-LCA.
